North Metro Pediatrics Receives Delta Dental of Minnesota Grant to Support Expanded Dental Care for North Metro Children
For Immediate Release
COON RAPIDS, MN (October 18, 2018) - North Metro Pediatrics (NMP) is pleased to announce it has received a $15,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Minnesota. These funds will support the clinic in providing preventative and comprehensive medical services in conjunction with dental health visits through our new community partnership with Apple Tree Dental (Apple Tree).
By combining preventive primary care and oral health care visits, NMP and Apple Tree are able to address the unique needs that reside in the community and accommodate the rapidly changing economic conditions. Delta Dental of Minnesota’s support of our preventative oral health services will directly impact the lifelong healthy oral habits of uninsured children with limited dental care options in our community.
Dr. Helgeson remarked, “We are so grateful to Delta Dental of Minnesota for their support of the important work we are doing in collaboration with North Metro Pediatrics. We know that this additional funding will allow our partnership to increase access to dental care and help educate families in the Metro area.”
According to the Department of Human Services, in 2015 only three out of every ten Medicaid recipients had a dental visit and children under the age of six were one and a half times less likely to receive dental services than those over the age of six. Furthermore, the Minnesota State Oral Health Plan explains that lack of access to affordable dental care may be what leads people to seek dental care in emergency departments and hospitals, resulting in high costs that could be prevented.
"While oral health has always been a focus during a well child check here at North Metro, the community need has increased and we were able to identify an area to take our approach one step further. By entering into a formal collaboration with Apple Tree Dental, we're able to integrate primary care and oral health care within our clinic," explains Jeff Lundgren, Executive Director of North Metro Pediatrics.
While this is a more common practice among community health clinics in the urban areas of the Twin Cities, this is the first such collaboration NMP is aware of within Anoka County. Also, the collaboration is unique in that no other clinic combines two visits into one efficient use of a parent’s time.
